Ayelet Waldman, mother of four, describes her first acid trip as making her feel “…a little more cheerful, a little more productive…and very magical.” Microdosing, taking small amounts of LSD every few days or so, is a new and controversial trend, mostly popular among the Silicon Valley crowd. Waldman, diagnosed with a mood disorder, admits to have trying other traditional prescriptions, but still found herself, “Profoundly, profoundly depressed…and suicidally depressed.”

Mind-altering drugs like LSD, mescaline, and mushrooms have played a role in psychedelic research for understanding psychological disorders such as schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. However, when these drugs leaked onto the streets, some people abused them and experienced “bad trips” or even death. Although these drugs are illegal, recent studies show that some of them may have genuine medical uses. According to Waldman, after she began microdosing LSD, her suicidal thoughts “disappeared.”

A recent 2016 study by Dr. Tony Bossis, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University, found that a single dose of a psychedelic drug called psilocybin can help treat anxiety and depression in patients with cancer. In this mind-blowing study, Bossis reveals that in patients from the study, their anxiety and depression were dramatically reduced immediately after taking the drug. After the drug wore off, the patients’ anxiety over their cancer returning was gone and a memory of their psychedelic experience remained. Even though the drug wears off within a few hours, patients experience a three to four-hour transcendant psychedelic experience, during which they are given spiritual insight on their own existence, says Dr. Bossis.

What if I am Using LSD?

Some states copy the federal classification of LSD, and categorize it as a Schedule I drug; however, some states have recognized the medicinal benefits of the drug and have it now as a Schedule II drug. Using LSD (also known as acid), even just micodosing it, is still a Schedule I drug crime under Illinois law. In fact, in Illinois, possessing LSD is a felony. Possessing more than 15 grams of this Schedule I drug can mean a fine up to $200,000 and four to 15 years in prison. Trafficking LSD and other Schedule I drugs over 15 grams means a fine up to $500,000 and six to 30 years in prison.

Possessing, selling, or distributing under 15 grams of a Schedule I drug can mean up to a $25,000 fine and up to one year in prison. If you or someone you know is arrested for the possession, sale, or distribution of a Schedule I drug, contact a drug lawyer who is experienced in drug crimes to help protect your freedom.
